A thousand years ago the Emperor Charlemagne invited the Kalonymos dynasty to move from their home in Lucca, Italy, to Mainz in Germany. They arrived in Germany and founded houses of study where they taught lessons of ethics and piety to generations of scholars. Today the voice of the Kalonymides returns in story. Jeffrey Salloway, a descendant, lives in northern New England with his Newfoundland dog, between the forests and the sea. He has taught in universities for half a century. His stories continue to describe humankind’s struggle to find mission and meaning in everyday life.
